Navigating roof leak repairs may be unfamiliar territory for many Southern Californians, but with recent rainfall, it’s an opportune time to learn about addressing these troublesome issues.
Vince Perri, a public insurance adjuster and president of Elite Resolutions, advises homeowners to review their insurance policies and pinpoint the exact time the damage occurred.
Perri asks, “When did you first notice it? If it was noticed years ago and nothing was done, then the agent is correct — it’s not a covered loss.”
Suppose you discovered a roof leak after this week’s rainstorm. Perri suggests that you document the damage by taking photos or videos and then contact your insurance company or an adjuster.
“The first step is to document everything as soon as it happens,” he said. “I always recommend taking videos and photos, whether it’s a burst pipe or a storm — capture images of the wind outside or anything relevant.”
To further strengthen your case with the insurance company, Perri recommends conducting some research.
“Try to find historical weather data from two to three days ago,” he said. “If you can prove there were excessive winds in your ZIP code, it will greatly help your case, demonstrating to the insurance company that this isn’t a long-standing issue. Instead, a significant event occurred in your area, leading to the damage your home is experiencing now.”
Perri also emphasizes the importance of completing necessary repairs promptly.
“You must mitigate your damages,” he explained. “This means protecting your home from further damage by covering the affected area with a tarp.”
Finally, Perri stresses not to delay. The sooner you file your claim, the higher your chances are of a successful resolution.
